The adequacy of the material identification can be interpreted either broadly or narrowly, depending on the purpose of the data. For most property data, a basic objective of material identification is to present sufficient information that someone else would be able to prepare or obtain a similar specimen. However, not all sets of data are meant to pertain to specific materials. Surveys, for example, commonly present only typical values or ranges of typical values; merely identifying a class or subclass of material might be adequate for that purpose.
